Fuel smell near the rear wheel after filling the tank, only when completely topped off

Noticed it last week after I filled the tank to the very first click and then squeezed in a bit extra like I always do, there was this noticeable petrol smell around the rear passenger side wheel well that lingered for a couple of hours and then went away as the fuel level dropped slightly. At first I thought maybe I'd just spilled a few drops but the ground was dry and the smell was definitely coming from somewhere up behind the wheel arch liner rather than the filler cap area. Did some reading and apparently the E90 and F30 generations have a known issue with the fuel tank vent pipe or the charcoal canister cracking, especially if the car has spent its life in hot climates where plastic components get brittle faster. I've stopped overfilling the tank for now and the smell hasn't come back, but I'm worried the damage is already done and there's a hairline crack somewhere in the vent system that's only exposed when the fuel level is right at the top. I want to take it into a BMW Garage to have the vent lines and the charcoal canister inspected properly before I end up with fuel vapour in a confined space or worse, but I'm curious if anyone else has had this exact symptom and whether it ended up being the plastic vent pipe or the rubber hose connecting to the filler neck.
